Totemic Terracotta Workshop with Bernard Kerr

Join internationally renowned ceramist, Bernard Kerr for a three day hand-building ceramics workshop to create your own terracotta horse. Be a part of the Habits of Horses Project and join the community celebration.

In the sessions, participants will explore how Indian, Hindu and Chinese cultures have reinterpreted the horse as symbol and a metaphor, whilst learning construction techniques to transform their own personal expression.

The course will cover: Cultural interpretation, pinch pot construction, rotating core and joining techniques, sculpture construction, smoothing and finishing as well as decoration techniques (adding texture, sprigging, incising, impressed texture, slips, underglazes and sgraffitto)


Free Community Open Day, 2pm Sunday 10 September. Midland Junction Arts Centre will come alive with Tamil dancing and food to celebrate the unveiling of the community Totemic Horses and the 3.5m terracotta horse created by artist in residence, Indian Potter Kasirajan.

Two exhibitions exploring the form, movement and people’s relationships to horses will be on show from 27 August to 24 September at Midland Junction Arts Centre.
