Have you ever broken a bone on the sports field, had a tooth fall out in class, or had an organ x-rayed? What part of your anatomy is significant or unique to you? Is there an imaginary body part you wish you had? In this workshop you will design a body part and use recycled materials to stitch, stick, tie, and stuff a range of fabrics and plastics to make your own unique specimen in a jar.

Screen-Printed T-shirt Workshop with Angela Ferolla

The Worn Out Worn Art Project is back in 2018 and to kick start it, artist Angela Ferolla will help you create your own upcycled, screen-printed t-shirt. Learn to make stencils and print a unique design, playing with colour and layering techniques. This fun workshop will teach you the basics of screen-printing and re-inventing un-loved and un-used clothing.

Angela Ferolla has taught costume design at WAAPA and directs her own fashion label. Be inspired by her fun approach and huge practical knowledge of textiles, fashion and design.

Bina Butcher and Tessa Beale will be opening their studio doors at Midland Junction Arts Centre on Saturday the 14th April from 10am-2pm. They will be working in the space and encourage questions and feedback about the work so far and the works in progress. This will be an opportunity to gauge people’s interactions and responses to the work in the lead up to their exhibition Penumbra. Everyone is welcome.

Penumbra focuses on contemplating and simplifying what is frequently overlooked in the natural world. In an effort to create a context for contemplation Bina Butcher and Tessa Beale have gathered natural elements and documented interventions in the environment during their three-month residency at Midland Junction Arts Centre. The resulting exhibition creates the conditions for a slower, quieter consideration of our surroundings. The exhibition opens Friday 27 April 6.30pm - 8pm. More details >

“Representations of the human body reflect deep-seated attitudes, beliefs, and values in cultures.”

Join renowned ceramicist Bernard Kerr in a series of workshops exploring the evolution and development of figure sculpture. You will learn about how the human body has been represented throughout the ages and the nature of the ceramic medium as you investigate modeling, carving, firing, and glazing. Through the sessions you will use an armature and construct a ceramic sculpture of the human body based on your own ideas, creating a unique piece with aspects of realism and abstraction. During the workshops, the group will discuss aesthetics, proportion and the notion of the body canon, as you work towards your completed sculpture up to 60 centimeters in size.

Engage directly with works of art in Gallery 1 meet invited artists Sarah Elson, Bec Juniper, Andre Lipscombe, Desmond Woodley and Yvonne Zago as they discuss their art works with curator Jenny Kerr.

And then in Gallery 2, surrounded by a selection of art on loan from the Shire of Mundaring Art Collection join in a discussion with collection curators and collectors about what art they collect and why, what do they look for and have recent changes to the arts environment affected the way they view Collections and collecting?

Susan Starcken (ECU Collection), Kate Parker (City of Perth), Gemma Ben-Ary,(City of Joondalup), Amanda Alderson (City of Wanneroo), Baige Zylstra (UWA, Collecting the West) and Andre Lipscombe (City of Fremantle) share their experiences, give some insight into the collections they manage, discuss the ways these collections have been built, by who and how are the acquisitions determined, and the constraints on these collections.

Old Blue Jeans - Deconstruct and Recreate Your Denim with Sarah Zel Chescoe

Over two sessions take a pair of old blue jeans and transform them into Textile Art...

Explore textile embellishment & surface manipulation techniques through the deconstruction and reconstruction of old blue jeans using hand stitch, embellishment and machine stitching.

Week 1: Explore a range of textile techniques & create a series of interesting samples from your Deconstructed jeans.

Week 2: Reconstruct your denim by exploring design ideas from your samples & transform these into a textile artwork for the body using stitch, further manipulation & embellish techniques.

Participants are invited to continue working on their piece at home to complete a Wearable Artwork in the Worn Out Worn Art Performance and Exhibition at MJAC in November 2018.

Weekend Drawing Marathon with Marie Haass

Explore beyond your limit over two days of immersive drawing. Artist Marie Haass will lead participants through exercises of non-stop drawing to loosen up and to push beyond limitations. Working independently on the first day and collaboratively on the second, participants will work from still life and live models in a series of concentrated exercises. Learn to approach your artwork fearlessly and see what you're capable of.

Marie Haass is a French/Australian visual artist. She studied and worked in Paris and Berlin before moving to Perth with her family. Her work is represented in major collections. She has held several lecturing positions in Visual Arts at Curtin University, Edith Cowan University and Central Tafe.

Relay Printmaking Workshop with Monique Bosshard-Curby

With a dose of collaboration, come on a journey of playful and sensitive exploration of the relief print process, investigating the visualisation of movement. 

In this printmaking workshop, you will explore a baton of a different kind - a printing plate and a print that is handed over from one to the next carrier, and so forming a collaborative artwork when all individual parts are assembled together.

A wonderful introduction to relief printmaking, you will explore mark making, representing various movements, application of carving tools, exploring progressive carving, layering and continuous printing in reductive processes.

Beginners and intermediate printmakers welcome, especially those interested in conceptual approaches to printmaking.

See Midland come alive for the Queen's Baton Relay event on Monday 26 February, as the baton passes through the City of Swan on its journey to the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. To celebrate this event, Midland Junction Arts Centre will be open from 12pm - 4pm, with an artist panel discussion to take place from 1pm - 2.30pm (approx).  

Artists participating in the Relay exhibition will come together to discuss their works in the exhibition and the broader significance of cultural events, including sports and the arts, in building a strong, inclusive community.

Pop into MAC and see the beautiful new works on show. Karen Frankel will be in Gallery 1 ready to answer any questions about her work, discuss her inspiration and processes.

Born in Zimbabwe, Karen grew up surrounded and influenced by the art of her father, gifted artist Eli Zagoria. Moving to Western Australia in 1984, she was captivated by the rugged beauty of the Western Australian landscape.

Karen has exhibited extensively across Western Australia, developing a following of devoted workshop participants and collectors. Karen runs a range of workshops from her studio in Morley and is renowned for her ability to teach beginners in a fun and relaxing way, encouraging their untapped skills.

WOWA Wearable Art Parade

Now in its 13th year, this year’s not-to-be-missed, Worn Out Worn Art Parade will be held at the Darlington Arts Festival 5.15pm – 6:15pm on Saturday 4 November.

The parade is a culmination of a year-long series of workshops where young people from across the Eastern region have pushed the creative boundaries to create dynamic Wearable Art from recycled and found materials.

A festival-style procession will begin the free showcase, leading audience members to the main stage at the Darlington Arts Festival to experience the incredible ‘sculptures for the body’ constructed in sessions at various school, community groups and at the Midland Junction Arts Centre.

Presented by Mundaring Arts Centre and the Local Drug Action Group, the Worn Out Worn Art project provides an outlet for young people’s creativity and self-expression. The project encourages young people to think outside the box exploring ideas, concepts and materials in innovative and unconventional ways.

Put on some old clothes and get ready for a brand new art club at MJAC! Over the course of 8 weeks students (ages 9-12) will be led through a series of structured and unstructured art sessions.

Each week participants will have the opportunity to explore new mediums (including acrylic paint, pencil, printmaking and sculpture), get creative and work on interesting projects.

On the afternoon of the last session, parents are welcomed to the Midland Junction Arts Centre for a viewing afternoon to see the group’s creations.
