Discovering Colour and Pattern with Sarah Thornton-Smith

Drop in and join artist in residence Sarah Thornton-Smith at the Midland Junction Arts Centre for a FREE  informal workshop any time between 10am – 1pm on Tuesday 19 December. Discover what nature has to teach us by constructing a handmade kaleidoscope. Using its patterns as inspiration, print onto card and/or fabric to create your own artwork to take home. A wonderful opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to get creative these Christmas school holidays.

Bookings essential and please allow a half hour to complete artwork.

Meet the Artist – Karen Frankel

Pop into MAC and see the beautiful new works on show. Karen Frankel will be in Gallery 1 ready to answer any questions about her work, discuss her inspiration and processes.

Born in Zimbabwe, Karen grew up surrounded and influenced by the art of her father, gifted artist Eli Zagoria. Moving to Western Australia in 1984, she was captivated by the rugged beauty of the Western Australian landscape.

Karen has exhibited extensively across Western Australia, developing a following of devoted workshop participants and collectors. Karen runs a range of workshops from her studio in Morley and is renowned for her ability to teach beginners in a fun and relaxing way, encouraging their untapped skills.

WOWA Wearable Art Parade

Now in its 13th year, this year’s not-to-be-missed, Worn Out Worn Art Parade will be held at the Darlington Arts Festival 5.15pm – 6:15pm on Saturday 4 November.

The parade is a culmination of a year-long series of workshops where young people from across the Eastern region have pushed the creative boundaries to create dynamic Wearable Art from recycled and found materials.

A festival-style procession will begin the free showcase, leading audience members to the main stage at the Darlington Arts Festival to experience the incredible ‘sculptures for the body’ constructed in sessions at various school, community groups and at the Midland Junction Arts Centre.

Presented by Mundaring Arts Centre and the Local Drug Action Group, the Worn Out Worn Art project provides an outlet for young people’s creativity and self-expression. The project encourages young people to think outside the box exploring ideas, concepts and materials in innovative and unconventional ways.

MJAC Art Club for Kids with Elizabeth Green-Mackinlay

Put on some old clothes and get ready for a brand new art club at MJAC! Over the course of 8 weeks students (ages 9-12) will be led through a series of structured and unstructured art sessions.

Each week participants will have the opportunity to explore new mediums (including acrylic paint, pencil, printmaking and sculpture), get creative and work on interesting projects.

On the afternoon of the last session, parents are welcomed to the Midland Junction Arts Centre for a viewing afternoon to see the group’s creations.

Community Arts Network and Mundaring Arts Centre join forces for this creative industry networking event.

Hear about MAC’s plans for Midland Junction Arts Centre and their latest project, Habits of Horses, currently exhibiting in Midland and Mundaring. Learn about how the community has been part of this exciting project.

We are also delighted to welcome the fabulous Madjitil Moorna Choir, featuring Della Rae Morrison, who will perform and teach songs in Noongar language.

Horse Drawn Drop-In Workshops

During the Horse Drawn and Vahana exhibitions we invite groups to book a free session and visit the potters in residence. Groups of 5 - 15 participants can take part in drop-in workshops on Thursdays 31 Aug, 7 Sep, 14 Sep and 21 Sep.

It's easy: simply choose a session, call or email our Education Manager and discuss a time that works for your group. You can select from the following workshops: 

CHARCOAL SKETCHING
Using the subject matter of the Horse Drawn exhibition as guidance, participants are provided with an easel, paper and charcoal to create imaginative equine forms. 

INK AND CONTE CREATION
Create a multi-layered mixed media artwork using ink, drafting film and conte crayons. In this conceptual session draw on personal experiences with horses and mood, and watch your style evolve. 

GUIDED TOUR
Organise a group visit to MJAC for a guided tour of the exhibitions and take a sneak peek into our international artists in residence studio as Kasirajan Subbaiah, from India, works to create a large-scale terracotta horse. 

CERAMIC PINCH POTS WITH LEE WOODCOCK
Running on 29 and 30 August only, Hills-based potter Lee Woodcock will discuss his residency at MJAC and guide participants in creating their own foal inspired pinch pot to take home. All materials will be provided. Lee is also available for talks and demonstrations.

Artist Talk with Clare Arni

Please join us to hear Clare Arni talk about her exhibition and the work she does in India documenting aspects of Indian cultural life. Her solo exhibition documents the lives of marginalised communities in some of the most remote regions of India and the disappearing trades of urban India. She will also provide an insight into the tradition of terracotta horse making and veneration of the Hindu gods.

The talk will be followed by a walk through to see the progress of the 3m high terracotta horse being created at the Midland Junction Arts Centre by Artist in Residence, Kasirajan Subbaiah from India.
