MAC celebrates the festive season with a cornucopia of contemporary craft secreted in 50 identical wooden boxes. This covert exhibition happens before the display in a twist of fate where buyers can purchase a secret artwork, sight unseen, and will only know who's artwork they have at the Opening of the Boxes on 11 November. There are only 50 covetable works of art, contributed by an impressive list of WA artists, to be ‘auctioned’ off to the first fifty buyers.

Spilling into sculpture, audio and installation, the exhibition sees exposure to art as a form of self-help culture, utilising the gallery as a place of relaxation and contemplation. Through his multi-media work and ancient yogic meditation, Muia encourages us to slow down, be mindful and engage with art.

Curated by Anna Sabadini

Curator Anna Sabadini asks, “Why paint in this day and age of all possible virtual realities?” She explains, relevant art necessarily needs to respond to its times, but in times where everything is of the now, an emphasis arguably responsible for the predictability of much of today’s art, there is an argument for the value of the past as a touchstone for quality, depth, richness and integrity. Anna invites a group of painters recognized for their exploration of media and their connection to process and materiality to respond to the brief, the Love of Painting. Unlike many group shows, Anna will work with the group to develop ideas and provide solidarity and mentorship as they participate in 4 atelier-type review sessions held quarterly over a year. Proposed artists include Lesley Munro, Felicity Sivewright, David Ledger, Anna Sabadini, Ben Joel, Bec Juniper, Mel Dare, George Haynes and Nigel Hewitt.
