Most of us have admired the gorgeous Stunned Emu shops and galleries in Fremantle, so it's super-exciting to invite Wendy Binks, the creator of award-winning emu Stripey and now ten clumsy emu pals, to exhibit and present at this year's heARTlines.
Below, Wendy answers our Four Fab Festival questions...
1. What book/s will you be speaking about at this year’s HeArtlines Festival?
My latest book is 10 Clumsy Emus, which I illustrated for Scholastic. I will be away much of the festival though, so instead of doing any school visits, I will be running a public workshop on landscape painting for absolute beginner painters.
2. Where did inspiration for that book come from?
I only illustrated the book, which is based on the song ‘10 green bottles’, but quirky, crazy emus are right up my alley, so I loved it!
3. What’s your advice to aspiring writers or illustrators of children’s books?
Practice your craft- It is absolutely true that authors and illustrators get better the more they do.
Network- Join peer groups, workshops, festivals, anything to rub shoulders with like-minded people.
Ask- Ask advice, and get help wherever you can. There is lots of help available out there, and other authors and illustrators are very generous people.
4. What did you have for breakfast this morning?
I don’t generally eat breakfast. I kind of subscribe to the ‘2 and 5’ diet theory, though I don’t follow it religiously. I admit I had chocolates for breakfast yesterday though. No-one's perfect!
You can see more of Wendy's work and buy her books at this year's heARTlines festival in Mundaring, where we'll be exhibiting awesome artwork from Western Australia's most fabulous children's illustrators, and featuring workshops from WA's best children's authors and illustrators, from 15 May till 28 June 2015.
The exhibition is FREE, and here's more information about primary school, high school and public workshops.
