Briony Stewart is a fabulously talented author-illustrator and winner of the 2012 Queensland Literature Award for children's writing. From chapter book adventures to adorable wordless picture books, Briony can turn her hand to anything.
This year we'll be exhibiting Briony's work as well as hosting some primary school workshops with Briony. Better book early, lucky ducks!
Below, Briony answers our Four Fab Festival questions...
1. What book/s will you be speaking about at this year’s HeArtlines Festival?
I will be speaking about my latest picture book, Here in the Garden
2. Where did inspiration for that book come from?
It came form the loss of a dear pet that had shown me two very important things about life. The first one was that the most painful part about loosing someone you love is how much you miss them, but the best part is truly cherishing the joyful times you had with them. The second lesson was simple, it was how to love and enjoy a garden. When you really spend time in a garden it always finds ways to remind you, even when you are sad, that you live in an amazing and beautiful world.
3. What’s your advice to aspiring writers or illustrators of children’s books?
Finish things, and work hard at being better!
A lot of people write one story and think that it's amazing and should be published and they spend ages trying to get that one thing published. But really they should continue dreaming up new projects to work on, keep learning how to be better and work hard at that. Sometimes its hard to predict which story will end up being your first book, but the more you keep learning, the more stories you write the greater the chance that at least one of them will wind up being published.
For unpublished illustrators- build a portfolio of stories, not singular, stand alone pictures.
4. What did you have for breakfast this morning?
I gobbled down two chapters of a new book I've started reading, a cup of tea and toast with lashings of quince jam.
You can read more about Briony and buy her books when you come to this year's heARTlines festival in Mundaring, where we'll be exhibiting awesome artwork from Western Australia's most fabulous children's illustrators, and featuring workshops from WA's best children's authors and illustrators, from 15 May till 28 June 2015.
