In 2013 Terri-ann White led a large project presenting writing workshops in desert communities across Australia. The drive to do this was to begin to understand better what it is to live in a remote place, in country rarely experienced by most Australians. Each of the three workshops was conducted by two writers and there were three Aboriginal and three non-Aboriginal workshop leaders: all bar one person had a strong affinity with that desert place. In this presentation Terri-ann will discuss the project (from the perspective of workshop leader, writer and publisher) that resulted in a book released in 2016 (Desert Writing: Stories from Country), and discuss what is at stake in such encounters and collaborations.
